Emerson Mott, President, and a Uniondale resident for over 27 years, has vast experience as an active community member. He is an active member of the Uniondale Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Mott served on the district-wide Safe School/Healthy School committee, was a PTA President and Vice President for 10 years, a site-based committee member at California Avenue School, an interviewing committee member, and coached district youth on Little League and PAL basketball teams. He earned a BA in psychology, and retired as a manager of Verizon after 27 years of service. Mr. Mott is the parent of a daughter and a son who graduated from Uniondale High School.
Dr. Terri Mangum, Vice President, began her tenure on the Board in July 2007. She received her B.A. degree from CCNY, a Master of Arts degree from NYU and her Ph.D. degree from Fordham University in Curriculum and Teaching. A community activist, she has lived in the district for 32 years and began her involvement through PTA at Grand Avenue and Lawrence Road. She taught for 14 years in NYC and came to Uniondale as an administrator in 1988. Dr. Mangum retired in 2006 from her position as Principal of California Avenue School after 18 years of distinguished service to the Uniondale School community. Dr. Mangum also serves on the Board of Trustees of the Long Island Children's Museum, her church vestry and works as an educational consultant for several educational agencies serving Long Island and New York City. She is the proud parent of four Uniondale High School graduates who are enjoying success in their chosen fields.
Bruno Cubas, Board Trustee, was a teacher in El Salvador and is working in the culinary field on Long Island. Since he moved to Long Island more than 12 years ago, he has been very active in the PTA. He has two children attending school in the Uniondale School District.
Neville G. Georges, Board Trustee, has served on the board from 1999-2005, was the President of the Board from 2001-2002 and Vice President during the 2000-2001 and 2013-14 terms. His extensive leadership positions include President of the Uniondale PTA Council, Chair of the Legislative Committee of the PTA Council, and 1st Vice President of the Uniondale High School PTSA. Mr. Georges was a Chair of the Uniondale High School Black History Month Program. A graduate of the City College of New York, Mr. Georges retired from his position as Module Manager in the Social Security Administration. He also was a substitute teacher for the Uniondale School District and a Nassau County Court-Appointed Child Advocate. Two of Mr. Georges' children earned the honor of graduating from Uniondale High School as Valedictorian and Salutatorian.
James Sharpe, Board Trustee, has extensive experience as an active parent in the Uniondale School District. He has served as President of the Uniondale PTA Council, 1st Vice President of the Uniondale High School PTSA, member of the high schools site-based management team, and a parent representative on faculty interview panels. He played a vital role on the Uniondale Budget Advisory Committee, serving as Chairman and Council Delegate. He was a member of the Crisis Management Team at Lawrence Road, a member of the Health and Safety Committee and the Cafeteria Observation Committee. He is a former Little League coach and retired as a New York City firefighter after 21 years of service. Mr. Sharpe has been a Uniondale resident for 16 years.
Giselle Rodriguez Benitez, Student Member, has been attending Uniondale Public Schools for the last 12 years. As a student who aims to take advantage of every opportunity for self-growth offered by the district, she has served in a variety of executive positions. These include Treasurer, President and Lieutenant Governor in Student Council, Class Committee, Model UN and Key Club. In her role as an officer in Key Club, Giselle served 12 schools from West Hempstead to Bethpage, guiding students who are committed to serve their local and global communities. At this summer’s Key Club’s International Convention, Giselle will seek the position of International Trustee. Her summer commitment also includes attending NYU’s College Access Leadership Institute where she will be trained to help other students in the college application process. Giselle is a varsity swimmer and bowler. As the student member of the Board of Education, Giselle will dedicate her time to ensuring that all students in our district are provided with an adequate learning environment and the tools necessary to capitalize on their education. She plans a dual major in Public Policy and Economics with the goal of helping to improve the nation’s economy and dissolve barriers faced by low-income families.
